Okay, we're back with more Avengers redesigns, and what we've got today are great!

Craig Payne
"I was having trouble choosing which characters to include in my Avengers team. I then came up with the idea to create a Black-Ops team of Avengers (similar to X-Force or Justice League Elite) which made it easier to select characters based on the suitability of their skills and powers for a team of this kind. From left to right: US Agent, Vision, Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Moonknight."

Thomas Crielly
"Initially i was going to give them some sort of 'movie style'  team uniform and make it more realistic but decided against that as i didn't want to basically create one new costume (FF style) and thought full on four-colour old style costumes would also be more fun.

"I decide to give them all a simple consistent 'belt buckle' with optional 'A' shoulder emblems, 'A' Gloves and V shaped tops where appropriate to tie them all together in some form while still allowing them to have individual costumes.

"The Vision: I was never really a fan of the Vision's cowl(?) so dropped that straight off and integrated the cape into the main body of the costume. I also kept his head all red so that he looks less like he is wearing a mask and a feels a bit less human.

"Wasp (Yellowjacket): This is a Hank Pym version combining various elements from his Yellow Jacket, Giant-man and Ant-Man identities.

"Captain America: I dropped the mask as i was never a great fan of it (and especially as it's pretty much the only 'fail' in the Avengers movie) and it's not like he really has a secret identity to protect these days. I wanted to keep all of the other elements in some form though so just tweaked and juggled them around a bit

"She-Hulk: I decided to keep a bit off an exercise / gym theme in her design as she has favoured that over 'proper costumes' in the past. I subdued the colours quite a bit from my fist few versions which were way too over-the-top (even for someone with green skin).

"Valkyrie: I tried to emphasise more of her warrior aspect and introduced some armour elements and a more earthy and gold colour scheme."

We've got 20  redesigns right here in this very post! So why are you reading this silly intro? Check them out!

"Well, as for which Avengers I picked, I thought I might take a stab at the movie team. (Sorry Hawkeye, only five redesigns allowed.) I tried for simple, functional designs. I messed with the color scheme a little, to make them look more like a 'team' but still allow for individual costumes. From left to right: Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor."

Justin DeVine
"I redesigned the logo first, turning the Avengers A into that lamda-looking thing in the background, and all the costume designs followed from that.

"Spider-Man's costume set the color scheme (or lack thereof) for the whole of them team, intending as it does to refer both to his traditional black costume and his Future Foundation duds. The only element I didn't feel comfortable changing the color of was Thor's cape, so that red became my accent color for the whole set. I especially enjoy the cord that attaches to Beast's Nez Pince; I imagine it clips to his fur somewhere on the back of his head.

"I've always hated the fact that Vision wore a cape and cowl, so I ditched it and tried to bring his android-nature to the forefront (this is a version of the original, rather than the current iteration). You can't see it in the Assembled image, but I also gave him toes, which is a detail I spent an inordinate amount of time thinking about."

David Karrow
"Doctor strange has always been very Euro in his costumes. Gaudy and extravagant are his middle names. Here i imagine that in his time after being cast down from his spot as the Socerer supreme, that he would have dabbled in other mystic arts. Here we see Strange in a custom Doctor Strange colored custom Shaolin uniform. thinking of all of the moves and mystic energies that flow through the Shaolin Warriors, Doctor strange with some adjustments to his disciplines would naturally fit in as a Shaolin warrior.

"Hellcat, having tutored under Strange seemed like a good team mate for him. Patsy Walker having volunteered for the 50 State Innitiative under Tony Stark, seemed like she might be in line for some subtle armor enhancements, and serious claw upgrade. Patsy walkers history as a model also lead me to believe she may be a bit to vain to run around with a cowl, and that a smaller mask could show some face, adn all that red hair shes been growing out!

"Spider-Woman and her blonde hair are due to me taking a cue from the Luna Brothers Spider-Woman Origin story. she is there identified to be a natural blonde who dyed her hair when she was on the run to black/dark brown, and it stuck. Here she has gone through a clarifying wash, and is sporting her natural color. The black in her uniform elongates her form, and her breastplate bears engravings that have subtle ties to her so far life long uniform. Her metallic shoulder armor house a mechanism that can expand and contract her armpit webs, and her colors are more on key with Spiderman's sort of putting them in a similar spider family.

"War Machine is always portrayed as being so clunky and cumbersome next to his counterpart Iron Man. Current machines of war, such as remote spy planes and similar futuristic tech only lead me to believe that his armor would evolve as such. James is equipped with hovering/disposable shoulder and wrist cannons, and the entire armor shell is made of a super dense, harder than Iron compressed ceramic material. The details on his black "glass" face plate reveal the War Machine readouts as James sees them from inside.

"Thing is best known for wearing panties in public while barefoot, and being depressed about his albeit useful disfigurement. I imagined that giving him more clothing and shoes could lend a sense of normalcy to this homespun guy. his need for armor is nonexistent, and his need for weapons is diminished by his giant clumsy rock hands, and his immense strength. His color pallet is also to help our friend Thing feel like an individual, separating him from his roots with the Fantastic Four and the Future Foundation."

Jamie Rimmer
"I wanted to show a team, a group of people who would look like a team, and who would be interesting to read about in terms of power and personality.

"Luke Cage/Powerman: Keeping it fairly simple, I quite like his non costume/costume approach, so I tried to keep it something that he would actually wear, which links back to the original Luke Cage costume of canary yellow with chains and armbands, while remembering the growth of the character and keeping it real, but with a bit of a fantastical twist.

"Photon, back to the name because there is only space for one pseudonym-less character on this team! Monica is so kick @$$, it is an actual travesty she isn't used more than she is currently. She is probably one of the most powerful superhumans within the MU, and is also a woman of colour, something that is often lacking. I see Monica more as the group chairperson, utilizing her business know how. I wanted to keep it familiar, but modernise the costume a tad; I kept te basic striking colour scheme, and the massive sleeves, as they are AWESOME! I simplified the chest design a bit, and gave her a skirt. Retro is in at the moment.

"Scarlet Witch is my all time favourite Avenger, and hey, its about time. Powerful sorceress, the team's magic wielder, and stays grounded through her love of the Vision, her constant rock, has perhaps a bit of a toned down power set, more like she used to have before she went crazy. I wanted to play close to Wanda's iconic costumes, with the corsetry implied, the tiara on show, but a more updated version, as this is a strong woman who would have grown out of the skimpy clothes. I have kept some skin on show though, just to reference the character, but hoped this was someting of a more grown up version of the Wanda I love.

"Vision as mentioned, is Wanda's rock and also the heart of the whole of the Avengers as I see it. I wanted the Vision to look a little bit more like an android, as opposed to the painted man he has looked since his creation. I attempted to incorporate a lot more texture within the suit and body, and liked te idea of him having a hood as well as the collar that is part of his usual costume, so I morphed it and included both in the end. I wanted to bring in more angles as I think it fits more with the cybernetic side of things, but I kept the colours similar to what we know and love, although a little more muted.

"Songbird is way past due for a redesign! I wanted to hark back her her origins as Screaming Mimi and bring into it the punkish aspects with the hair, geisha-like makeup and colar, but I also really wanted Songbird to have a minimal, yet striking, design. I played around with curves here, referencing her energy signature that can be seen whilst in flight, the muted colours are something I hoped would be reminiscent of a bird -- that and the hairstyle giving a sort of birds crown/cocks comb effect.

"It was my intention with this team to have a balanced and well rounded team; I liked the idea of them perhaps being a shadow team, a lot of the powers at play lend themselves to espionage, but on reflection I think this team could also be a fine stand in, with a few additions as Earth's Mightiest Heroes themselves!"

With time for Avengers submissions rapidly diminishing, a couple more have shown up to compete for the title of Earth's Mightiest Heroes:

Christian Scheuer
"Mockingbird: I decided to keep her outfit simple, with a little bit of the old and new. I like the fact that she appears to wear glasses as a superhero so I made them with dark rims and yellow lenses.

"Talon/X-23: Straightforward design with much less midriff showing. Her armband has claw like strips to recall a bit of family history. And she wears Converse.

"Jewel/Power Woman: I didn't want to do the female version of Power Man thing, so I started fresh and made up a not in street cloths costume. Boot like leggings, covered shoulders and a smaller jewel moved to her chest, no mask as she never had one and her identity is public knowledge.

"Spider Woman: I thought she should have her whole face covered, it adds a bit more spookiness to her, also redesigned the yellow in her costume, pointing up and more angular, the yellow can be "turned off" for a little more stealth.

"Valkyrie: A mix of fashion and that Asgardian look. I ditched the cape and gave her more of a skirt, it looks better than a one-piece swimsuit.

"I went with an all female team because I thought it would be interesting dynamic, master spies, well-trained operatives, investigators and powerful women. Most of these women have been messed with in serious ways: abducted and impersonated by Skrulls, cloned and trained to be a weapon, minds manipulated and death oaths to gods. They all have an Avengers logo on an armband or patch on a shoulder, tying them together while keeping individual looks."

Joshua Daniel
"After the great 'Bendis catastrophe' that wiped out a league of heroes, these are the only Avengers left to figure out what happened, who orchestrated it, and avenge their fallen comrades. They're a group of misfit heroes who are all either former villains or unstable, and the only thing keeping them together is the idea of the team itself. They are...the Avenging Avengers!

"Yellow Jacket was a villain, but decided to use her tech powers for good. She's young, brash and a punk. She has Ant Man's shrinking, Wasp's wings, and Black Widow's stingers. Since 'jacket' is in her name, I gave her an actual jacket, and gave her more of a stylish/posh look. She still thinks this is fun.

"Luke Cage is the strongest on the team. Since he's a close friend of Cap's, he feels it necessary to wear cap's old colors, though he still can't bring himself to put on a proper costume. He's a beloved everyman, probably the most trusted of the group. He regularly fights with Bucky over team leadership.

"Bucky, back in his Winter soldier uniform, can't bare to put the Captain America costume on again, although he embedded a broken piece of cap's shield into his bionic arm. I wanted his arm to be more haphazard, and he wears a scarf for a little color. He leads the team of misfits but he's very secretive and struggles being a leader.

"With this version of Spider-Woman, a piece of the Symbiote attached itself to her, giving her more of her black and white look. She still has flight and laser stingers, but also has webbing now. Usually she can keep it in check, but it creeps in the edges of her psyche on her toes and fingers. I kept just a hint of yellow on her forehead.

"My version of Moon Knight is not the original Moon Knight, but a Skrull trying to copy moon knight who went crazy trying to mimic all his personalities. He's a rogue Skrull fighting for good, and frequently is struggling with who he is. I gave him more wraps and bandages and more of a creepy gangly look, and just a hint of the Skrull chin coming out."

Finishing up the Avengers submissions with some really interesting teams.

Kamau Mshale

"Avengers women. I know I'm barely making this, I didn't think I would be able to and then I had a few extra hours. and I had an idea I like. even though I wish I could have put more time into it. I tried to do a kinda of traditional look for them. Scarlet witch, is emerald and has more of an Celtic feel. I used red for she-hulk. I used Yoruba all white dress for photon. I tried to get more of a warrior look for war bird who often feels more like that then like a military brat. and I used a very sparse spy game look for black widow. thanks again for the opportunity to be seen."

TBolt

"Left to right: Hulk is working for a division of SHIELD that goes after 1950's Marvel Monsters ala Hellboy. Cap is just a plain old redesign with chest armor and his GI belt, Thor is redesigned to reflect the Norse heritage a bit more than his comics do. Black Widow is a 60's go-go style gal, and big old clunky Iron Man is based off his original look."

Ross Radke

"The Team - Choosing only five team members from their expansive roster was a daunting task, but I decided early on that I wasn't going to pick any of the Avengers who appeared in the film. I wanted to include some founding members, which left only Ant Man and Wasp. From there I worried less about power sets and tried to pick a team that I would have fun writing myself. These aren't necessarily my favorite Avengers, just ones who I thought could use a new design and whose relationships would provide drama. Hank Pym and Machine Man's competing egos would be fun. Two of Pym's exes are on the team and I'd eventually throw Jocasta into the mix, creating the Marvel universe's most awkward love pentagon. Come to think of it, I think all the Avengers has hooked up with everyone else at some point or another.

"Ant Man - Founding Avenger. Innovator in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. Genius geneticist. Superhero. Wife Beater. Hank Pym will never get respect. Fun costume to redesign, especially coming up with abstract shapes that suggested insects.

"Wasp - I don't think you can have Ant Man without Wasp. Comics are basically super powered soap operas, why not embrace that? I always thought it made sense for Wasp to have a helmet, especially considering how often she was defeated in early Avengers comics by falling debris.

"Machine Man - Super-intelligent, humanoid android. World's greatest Swiss army knife. Companion of Celestials. Alcoholic chauvinist. Aaron Stack is more man than machine. I love both the somber Earth X incarnation and the wacky Nextwave version. This is something of a transitional phase, more similar to his earlier appearance.

"Tigra - Not really a big fan furry titillation, but she could be a good character if she was treated less like a swimsuit model and more like a mixed martial arts fighter.

"Speed - Originally I was going to include Quicksilver, but I thought the team needed some young blood. The red diamond on his chest is a reference to the fact that the original Vision is sort of his father in a convoluted way. That would be an interesting dynamic to explore.

Isaac Bartsch

"I had a hard time making a decision about which Avengers to include with only five slots to fill and so many options.  I ended up with Captain America (Bucky Barnes), Wasp, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange; I chose them based on the wide range of abilities and personalities, I thought it would make for a good story or two with this team dynamic.  I had a blast drawing them and am inspired to draw some more Avengers redesigns.
Mannan Mokhtar

"My line up are the 5 most popular Avengers from the movie at least. From left: Hulk, Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Black Widow. I try not to be too ambitious with my redesign. Accept for Hulk and Cap.  Great fan of the new Hulk take on from Marc Silvestri. Just for me if hulk is long
haired he should be rasta. From 5 avengers i picked i think Cap is the most flexible to redesign. Try to give a more natural and classic look to it. So i came out with the idea of air force uniform for Cap. As for Thor, the Dragon Ball influence was there. Iron Man is classic
enough so no major tweak just make the suit more human this time. Lastly for Black widow i played more with the red black widow symbol and there's a 60's look at the fish net sleeves.

[Update - 5/29]

Omar sent this in with my approval, but I didn't get this off to Mitch. My bad. Because of that, Omar's piece is eligible, it was in with approval, but I dropped the ball. This makes it different than the Extra Avengers! post, which consists of additional submissions and late pieces that did not get the approval of eligibility for the contest through administrator approval. - AG

Omar I. Landeros
"WINTER AGENT - Specialties: Field Leader, Strategist, Pointman

"James 'Bucky' Barnes has been fighting since World War II. He was drafted as the leader of this motley crew due to his phenomenal knowledge in all forms of combat, vast experience in the black ops field and the leadership capabilities gained in his stint as Captain America. He is an excellent strategist and excels and an inspiring leader. His weapons of choice here are twin custom Desert Eagles and anything else he can get his hands on. i wanted his suit to remind me of his Captain America connection but in a much more muted scheme. A cool feature is that his turtleneck unrolls into a ski mask.

"AGENT MOONDRAGON - Specialties: Telepath, Communications, Long Range Support, Psionics

"Our second in command, Heather Douglas, is arguably the most powerful telepath in the planet. She does not possess any superpowers, yet martial arts and other forms of training have honed her body and mind to the pinnacle of human perfection. Able to perform any feat she can put her mind to, the things she can achieve are only limited by her own hubris. Except for the slight heel in her boots, Moon Dragon's suit is now more about combat readiness than vanity. Armor instead of her string bikini and military shades of her usual greens. Her strength of mind make her a an excellent marksman, she's outfitted with a long-range sniper rifle and a Beretta sidearm.

"AGENT VENOM - Specialties: Close Quarter Combat, Heavy Artillery, Demolition

"Flash Thompson’s military career is nothing short of heroic. His combat expertise, and vast experience in the field, makes him our best choice for the muscle of our team fast, hard and loud are his M.O. More importantly he has developed a better understanding of the Venom symbiote making him that much more dangerous in combat and accounts for the size increase. Due to the nature of the symbiote, Venom has the most unique uniform. Asides from the dual glocks and the "Rambo" knife, he carries a lot of explosives so I was going to make his colors more on the hot side, but when I saw how the different blues and purples played together I was sold.

"AGENT ECHO - Specialties: Stealth, Master of Disguise, Espionage & Infiltration

"Maya Lopez was our first choice for our greaseman, stealth, and all around chameleon. Although Echo was chosen in part for her extraordinary acrobatic abilities, and her almost limitless skill with any weapon, her most important asset, is her uncanny ability to mimic any movement, posture or gait down to the smallest twitch of a muscle; making her an unparalleled master of disguise. Echo is equipped with twin Ninjato, a tomahawk and a Walther PPK with a silencer, a la 007. Her suit is mainly dark blacks and reds for stealth, and green accents in connection to her Ronin persona. Tabi boots for extra grip and silence, and no mask. If you see her face is because she meant for you to, or because you're already dead.

"AGENT FIREANT - Specialties: Hacker, Technology, Weaponry, Reconnaissance, Transport

"Being one of the eight most intelligent people in the Marvel Universe, Amadeus Cho is our resident expert in anything mechanical or technological. His new found love and skill with specialized weaponry is no exception. His suit is various shades of red, mostly copper. His recent acquisition and modification of the Antman tech has given him an extra edge using insects and nanobots as remote rangers. Cho does not go out on the field much but he is no slouch when it comes down to it. After having to give back Hercules’ mace, Cho now wields one of his own making, which grants him a limited force field, enhances his strength, can emit EMP’s, and electrocute on impact. Cho prides himself in being prepared for anything and is known to carry different gizmo's with him at all time one never knows what he's gonna come up with next. He never does either."

Over the last two months, we've run a contest that asked you to redesign a team of characters. Prior to that, we asked you to redesign a duo. It was an experiment of sorts, something we thought might be fun to try, particularly in terms of the Avengers contest, as it was, as far as I know, something no other redesign site had done yet.

The contests for the rest of the year will ask artists to focus on individual characters, but we're curious as to whether you'd like to see a team redesign challenge again in the future? Did you enjoy the Avengers contest? Did you hate it? What did you like? What could be done better? Do you think the whole thing was a failure?

We really want your input. Please let us know what you think in the comments about doing team challenges, and anything else you think may make the site better. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

OFFICIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT - DOCTOR OCTOPUS

With the release of The Amazing Spider-Man just around the corner, we asked readers of Superhero of the Month to tell us which villain from the Raimi trilogy they wanted to see redesigned to tie into the release of the new movie. Overwhelmingly, Otto Octavius took the lead, and never looked back.

As such, Superhero of the Month is proud to present Doctor Octopus as the redesign challenge for June!

Look to your left, and you'll see a costume that may have said "mad scientist" in years past, but screams fashion faux pas today. And that's where you come in. Let's modernize Ock. There's a lot of fun that can be had with him, and in this case, I think the mechanical arms are just as much fair game as the costume is... after all, they've been changed from time-to-time, so I see no reason why we can't have fun with them now.

Doctor Octopus redesigns are due Friday, June 22 by 8:00 PM MST. All basic submission guidelines should be followed. Feel free to shoot any questions to superheroofthemonth@gmail.com. Good luck!

Avengers Contest Delay

Just a heads up, the results of the Avengers contest will be delayed. I just got back from a vacation, and haven't even had a chance to do my part in judging. As such, we'll announce the winner on Monday, June 4, with Doctor Octopus results soon to follow. Sorry for the delay, but I'd rather do the whole thing right, than try to rush it. Thanks!

Extra Avengers!

Entries for the Avengers contest were limited to one submission per contestant, but that didn't stop some Superhero of the Month contributors from going the extra mile. Here is their additional work:

Edgar Binuya
"The Vision: I was aiming at the strong and streamlined look he sported in the Anti-Vision body back in the 90's while trying to incorporate a 'V' in the design. I pushed the redesign further by incorporating the barefoot look from his white body. Even as a 'synthezoid', he may need to cover up, but he shouldn't need boots, or gloves, for that matter.

"Wonder Man: To me, Wonder Man has always had pretty gaudy costumes. This is my effort at making him look cool. I brought back the hip propulsion packs because I thought they were a neat and unique concept. They are ion powered by him and can be used offensively as guns.

"Tigra: I was looking at pictures of actual tigers to really nail down the look of her stripes and realized that if she could develop stripes and even a tail, she would develop the actual coloring and markings of a tiger. So I added the white fur and changed the markings on her face to more closely resemble that of a tiger's. I then pushed it further with ears that ever so slightly peak out of her hair.

"Black Knight: While wanting to make him armored, I wanted to keep it minimal. In order to make him look like the perfect balance of science and magic, I focused on making the armor look modern but medieval inspired. He wields the Ebony Blade as well as an energy shield that also doubles as an additional blade.

"Sersi: I found inspiration for this from Dejah Thoris' gown in the John Carter movie. I also basically took the crisscrossed bands from her latest costume and went crazy with it."

SplendorEnt
"The man for when things get odd, The Merc with the Mouth, Your friendly neighborhood web-slinger, The best at what he does, The man without fear, The Wakandaan Ambassador, The SHIELD AGENT turned hero that lost her powers and became a consultant and then got her powers back, The marksman, The billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, The Super Soldier, The demigod of thunder, The incredible one up to your army, The Russian assassin, The Hero for hire, The martial artists, The bounty hunter, The mystery, The vigilante, And last but not least the former Captain America replacement that became the director of SHIELD."

Sarah Meissner
Editor's Note: Sarah didn't leave any thoughts on her submission, but we enjoyed her minimalist take on the Avengers!

David Karrow
"My second team is inspired about the second class citizenship that the Avengers impose on the X-Men whenever they disagree with the way Cap has things planned out. These mutants, though immensely powerful in different ways, and have been inducted into the avengers for different reasons, are all looked at as lesser for being powerful, without having to be frozen in ice, or be a genius, or be a god.

"Firestar, one of my long time faves suffers from the disadvantage of being the only mutant to suffer from the negative effects of her own power. having received cancer, and being rendered infertile by her own radioactivity, Firestar has been given this suit which channels out her radiation, and protects her from herself. her should armor functions as an exhaust system to expunge radioactive gasses that have been rendered harmless by the suit. Her gloves have holes in them so that she can channel her fire out though the palms of her hands.

"Namor, King of Atlantis is notoriously arrogant and that can be illustrated by his wearing panties all of the time or a deep V. his scanty armor over his lower back are made from the finest golds, the rarest of Atlantian green metals, and silver vibranium from the mines of Wakanda. His gold adorned foot wraps allow for more foot exposure to ensure more dynamic underwater maneuverability.

"Beast functions as one of the many MEGA BRAINS who work with the Avengers. but his powers are much more varied. he is an advanced and skilled gymnast, and this long pant singlet allows for him to maneuver more freely. His color choices were also an attempt at separating him from his roots as a blue and yellow X-Man.also, he is reading Shakespeare on his APad.

"Storms hair is so starkly odd from what we expect to see from an African American woman, there is no reason not play with it more; here she has a asymmetrical Rihanna style shave job. and her all black costume serves to enhance her aerodynamics. Varied gadgets can be found on her wrist and fore arm panels, and her breast plate is stark white to match her accessories and uncannily white hair.

"Wiccan is the gay teen son of the Scarlet Witch, and grandson of Magneto, and all that together is a healthy heaping of complicated. His head piece is meant to remind us of who his family is, and where he comes from. A click away from mutant royalty, Billy here is embracing it with his Magneto/Which shaped headpiece, his long gloves, and for a splash of modern teen, ridiculously cute shoes. I stayed with a lot of the similar colors here because Billy is so young he has very little historical colors to run away from."

Thomas Crielly
"Ms. Marvel: This costume is based around her own original costume and the original Captain Marvel's second costume.

"Thor: This is based around Thor's original costume. The "V" area of his costume forms the cape front, and I have tweaked the helmet, too.

"Falcon: This is mostly just juggling around elements of the Falcon's mainstay costume, the main change being that I decided to give him a controllable 'glider-cape' instead of the traditional wings.

"Black Panther: I wanted to adapt the mask/cowl so that you could see his face. I've kept the costume pretty simple and clean- just adding some ribbing texture to make the suit a bit more durable looking and added some gold highlights at the claws.

"Wonder Man: This is based around his black red costume. I added an energy release point in the chest area of the V top."

Christian Scheuer
"Captain Marvel: I based this on the newly announced uniform, but gave it more of a flight/dive suit feel to it."

Christian Scheuer
"Black Widow: I just wanted to give her a dress based on her normal uniform, something like an Avenger's cocktail dress with subtle logos on her arm, leg and shoes.

"Iron Woman / Jocasta: I sort of mashed up some characters, mostly I wanted to have an Iron robot. This design is somewhat of the classic look for an Iron Man suit, the pointy face and simple features, I turned the center chest piece into an oval and gave it that pinkish purple electric glow that Jocasta has in her eyes. She is bigger than other designs to imply that she uses Pym Particles and acts as three or more avengers at once.

"Quake: A simple design, jeans and a top that look like a S.H.I.E.L.D uniform. I simplified the gauntlets and made gloves with smaller mechanicals on them."

Matthew Ray
"Left-to-Right: Vision, Ms. Binary (Ms. Marvel w/ Binary's powers), Photon, Wasp and Ant-Man."

There you have it! Stay tuned to Superhero of the Month in the coming days: June 4, we'll announce the winner of the Avengers contest, and Doctor Octopus results will shortly follow!

Superhero of the Month - Craig Payne's Avengers!

$

0
Okay, after a bit of an extended judging period, we can finally, officially congratulate Craig Payne on winning the April/May Avengers contest! Craig's submitted to us many times before, and with this month's contest, the judges pretty unanimously felt he knocked it out of the park. Here's what we all thought:

Craig Payne - 169/200
Alex: The simplicity here is excellent. Nothing is overdone, and the simplicity of these designs gives the impression that they would translate easily into different styles and mediums. My favorites here are Hawkeye and Vision, but the others look phenomenal, as well. The only one I'd need a clue regarding identity is Moon Knight. I think it's a fine design, but the giveaway isn't immediate.

Mitch: This is all about the little things such as US Agent's red eyepieces, or Hawkeye's pointy eyepieces and glove. The Moon Knight is also pretty interesting and wouldn't mind seeing someone in that suit. Won't lie though: I'm a fan of Hawkeye's dorky head points as they give him an instantly recognizable profile.

Taylor: I really enjoyed the sleekness of this design and how it was so simple and worked so well. The stand out for me here was the Hawkeye design, I really like the almost-trench coat look of it, as well as how it connected to the mask. I also enjoyed the hood on Vision helping to definitely make this look like a well trained Black-Ops team. Well done!

Sebastian: Craig's was easily my favorite of the bunch. The designs are simple and elegant and they work well together and form a cohesive look. Hawkeye is easily my favorite and the top scoring among these. It's just so slick and I love the overcoat look, though I don't quite understand why Craig chose to use different designs for each arm sleeve. I think Vision and US Agent are really solid as well, and instantly recognizable which is always a plus. The weaker characters in this batch are Moon Knight, who I don't think I would've recognized him if I hadn't been told it was him (though I love the inverted logo), and Mockingbird who is a little too busy in areas, especially in the lower half of the design. A well deserved win.

Judging for this contest was done by the Superhero of the Month staff and Sebastian von Buchwald, winner of our Birds of Prey contest. As is customary, Craig now has the option of joining us this month for our Doctor Octopus contest.

Hey there! Doctor Octopus results have started to come in, and we're kicking it off with this reinterpretation from Thomas Fummo!

Thomas Fummo
"Got rid of the mechanical arms and replaced them with jacks and usb cables, turning Otto into The Octopus, notorious genius hacker, capable of sending entire cities into disarray at the click of a button. Decided to go mainly on Otto's 'master planner' persona for this redesign: I see Otto also working from afar to destabilize politics, organize crime hits, robberies, even murders... when a certain spider doesn't tangle his webs."

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to send in your Doctor Octopus redesign soon! Check out the Official Contest Announcement for details!

Doc Ock submissions have been slow-coming so far, but we're happy to present another when we can!

Matthew Ray
"My take on Ock is an even heavier-set villain who has to resort to wearing sweats! I edged up the tentacles with razor spines running along their length."

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out the first submission we've received so far while you're at it! Doctor Octopus redesigns are due June 22, so be sure to check out the Official Contest Announcement for details on how to send yours in!

A couple more submissions came in over the weekend that we're quite excited to share with you. Check them out:

Warren Newsom
"Instead of having robotic arms grafted to him, my Doc Ock was a geneticist who accidentally transformed himself into a part-human, part-part cephalopod creature. The transformation increased his already amazing intelligence and gave him extra, powerful appendages and increased healing abilities. Maybe he’s aquatic too?"

Okii Shirow
"I got tired seeing him as a big fat slobbery dude; its time for the tall, thin and cunning Ockman!"

[Update]

Last month's winner, Craig Payne, decided to forego guest-judging this contest in order to participate fully, and sent us this take on Doctor Octopus:

Craig Payne
"I wanted to give Doctor Octopus a more inhuman look, so I imagined that he recieved major injuries in the explosion that created him; in particular losing his legs, scorching his lungs and recieving serious burns to his face and arms. This version of Doctor Octopus replaces his legs with the mechanical tentacles, and utilises breathing apparatus, making his hi-tech costume a kind of life support system."
What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out the submissions we've received so far while you're at it! Doctor Octopus redesigns are due this Friday, June 22 by 6:00 pm Mountain Time, so be sure to check out the Official Contest Announcement for details on how to send yours in!

Doctor Octopus Results - Part 4

Another contest come and gone! Here are the final submissions for the Doctor Octopus contest!

Isaac Bartsch
"Doctor Otto Octavius, brilliant physicist and inventor, is the foremost in clean energy research. To aid him in his experiments he creates a harness that uses electromagnets to control through a cybernetic interface four prehensile plasma 'tentacles' which allows him to work with materials otherwise too harmful or dangerous for humans to handle. Tragically, an experiment gone wrong caused an explosion that left Octavius horribly scarred and physically disabled. Driven mad by his disfigurement and deformity, Dr. Octavius uses his genius to modify his plasma tentacle harness to allow him the freedom of movement and a chance at revenge on those he believes reconsider for his condition, and this Doctor Octopus is born!

"I had a blast with this redesign, it was a challenge to design Ock and the tentacles, as they were a character in and of themselves! I decided his suit should look a little like a hazmat suit, as he was injured working with chemicals and energy, and I could get away with his traditional green and orange color scheme. I always thought it strange that he was in the accident that bonded his harness to him but bore no scars, so I gave him some gnarly face scars and removed his left hand and legs, making him reliant on his harness even more. I didn't want to go with the traditional metal tentacles so I decided to make them an amorphous plasma which he can reshape for whatever use. All in all though I really wanted to keep his rotund shape and some of his earlier characteristics to make him still be Doc Ock."

Editor's note: The next submission comes from Superhero of the Month's youngest submitter, who last entered our Batman contest. We're very excited he's come back with this inventive take on Doctor Octopus!

Connor
"My Doctor Octopus was a scientist who worked for Norman Osborn. The facility Doc worked at was the same facility that made the spider that bit Peter Parker. The spider was Doc's experiment. He specialized in genetic mutation of DNA. So one day, Norman fires Doc. Doc, in rage, locks himself in his lab. When Norman sends the tear-gas bombs in, Doc goes blind and knocks over his creations and chemicals! The chemicals mixed and exploded. The genes and chemicals seeped into Doc's cuts and wounds, thus mutating him into...Doctor Octopus!"

Justin DeVine
"I’m imagining a Doctor Octopus whose snobbery and disdain for physical labor have been pushed to pathological extremes--he’s gone from simply a rotund braniac-type to a corpulent recluse whose superiority complex prohibits him from engaging the world. In temperament, he seems to be equal parts Maxie Zeus and Miss Havisham.

"He’s given up on using his own physical limbs, and operates instead entirely with his mechanical prostheses. This aversion is so strong that he refuses even to step foot on the ground, and as such, I imagine his legs have become withered and atrophied due to lack of use. The garment he wears is a combination of a ceremonial robe, a lab coat, and (as a friend described it) 'the world’s most epically long muumuu.'

The collar operates as a neck guard, but is also connected to some sort of neural network which exchanges sensory information between the Doctor's brain, and the processors of his mechanical limbs. The tentacles also each have sensors on their ends, which process data about the immediate surroundings which is forwarded to the operator, thus allowing him to respond to proximate threats more quickly than he could otherwise."

Ross Radke
"I've always been fascinated by the octopus's ability to rapidly change color and wanted to incorporate that into this design. The inspiration came from this 'invisibility' technology. Other than that, I just sort of dressed him up like a Bloober from Super Mario."

Christian Burns
"I see Doctor Octopus as a nanotechnologist and nanophysicist, working both with nanite technology and the fusion of those nanites with laser technology. In the accident that creates him, the nanite-composed tentacles are fused to his body, as well as the control headband, implants, and light generators on his back. His tentacles are actually composed of segments of nanites (whose programming have been stuck in tentacle form with very little variation) that are connected to each other by beams of light. This way, the tentacles themselves cannot be permanently separated unless a light dampener is employed against him. And since Spider-Man isn't a rich man, and probably can't make an EMP from scratch, that makes Doc Ock VERY hard to defeat. His body is covered in light circuits that contain millions of light-power units that fuel the tentacles. The tentacles themselves can extend, both due to nanite duplication and light generation. The claws at the end of the tentacles can also turn into various weapons, with a blade weapon shown."

Mark Hartman
"The good doctor has seen fit to do away with his frail human form locking it within his new eight tentacle exo-octopus. Inside his body appears dormant but his mind is hard at work, amplified by the octopus' super high-tech processor and protected by a thick layer of armor."

Thomas Crielly
"My basic idea was that although the mechanical arms are permanently fused to him, with his scientific knowledge he would be able to modify and create interchangeable 'extensions' for them allowing him to carry a whole armoury of weapons and devices. In addition to providing him with more energy sources and weaponry options the armour also helps to support the additional weight of the extensions carried on his back through an anti-gravity system ,which also makes the armour lightweight."

Joshua Daniel
"In my version of Doc Ock, the explosion that changed him into Doctor Octopus, his legs and right arm were blown off.  He uses his tentacles more as a way of support and as false legs. He also turned his severed hand into a multi-tool for scientific/surgical procedures. He's usually more of a scientific, experimental character rather than a fighter, but when he gets riled up(or when someone insults his bowl haircut), he goes full tentacle.  His arm can also turn into smaller tentacles or a myriad of weapons."

Omar I. Landeros
"I was feeling sorry for myself when a guy with a prosthetic leg passed me. A prosthetic leg. How inspiring is that? I started looking at the list of villains who've gone bad because they got handed lemons from life, and it made me pretty mad. What does that say about human life? Human will?  I have a wonderful sister-in-law who at a very young age was affected with a rare form of spina bifida and was told she'd never walk again. She walks with the aid of crutches, and even though she lives in pain every day of her life, she doesn't become bitter or malicious. She is one of the strongest willed people I know and there has not been a challenge she hasn't been able to beat. So here's to you Miss Montoya: In my world Otto Octavious loses his legs in a car accident in high school. He decides to do something about it and through hard work and no shortage of will becomes a leader in the field of metallurgy, engineering and prosthetics.  His crowning achievement being his tentacle suit. The part on his back is actually a personal hover craft, which allows him to get around without having to touch the ground, and the rest of his suit houses a liquid metal alloy of his own invention which give him the ability to make his tentacles into almost any form he needs. To give back to the community, he works at Empire State University where he teaches his field. Upon meeting Peter Parker, he feels kindred to the poor kid whom life keeps throwing lemons at, and chooses to become his mentor. Ta-da."

Eric Kenney
"I had alot of fun with this one. I was inspired by the comic Invincible; I love the simplistic straight-forward costume designs of it's characters and I agree with something I read once that said Invincible is what Spider-Man should be. I didn't want to recreate the character, but I did want to give him character, so I stuck ole' Otto in a sort of patent leatherish body-suit, cause what's eviler than the smell of a chubby scientist sweating inside it? I obviously went literal with the name and adorned him with a huge mechanical octopus. It just seemed to make sense. I saw it as sort of a Batman-esque way to put fear into civilians and heroes alike; I mean lets face it, he's not the most fit of villains and his stature leaves much to be desired, so he would want to change that right? Lastly I went with straight tentacles and no gizmos on the tips. Something different."

Blair J. Campbell
"I set out to make my take on Doc Ock fit a few criteria. 1) I wanted his new suit to look like it might be able to protect him from radiation better than just a set of extra arms. I updated his suit into a more realistic take on a radiation suit; 2. I wanted his silhouette to actually be more octopus like. If you saw him in the dark, it would be a lot easier to mistake him for an actual octopus now; and 3) I wanted to keep his original green and yellow color scheme."

And there we have it! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out the submissions we've received so far while you're at it! The winner of the contest will be announced June 30, but stay tuned: on Monday we'll be announcing our next contest, plus a special fan art post for July!

OFFICIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT - BAT-FILM VILLAINS

$
0
0
The Dark Knight Rises lands in theaters this month, and it features characters we've seen on film before -- namely Catwoman and Bane. While many are anxious to see what Team Nolan do with these characters, it begs the question, "What might have been?"

In modern Bat-films, there have been three directors, each with a unique take on Batman and his world: Tim Burton gave us a Gothic wonderland, Joel Schumacher gave us neon and an over-the-top flair, and Christopher Nolan has given us a Batman grounded in a world similar to ours.

Each director can also lay claim to uniquely using certain characters in their films. Where the Joker, Catwoman, Two-Face, and Bane have been shared among directors, the following three have not.

Burton's take on the Penguin was radically different from the interpretation of Oswald Cobblepot in the comics. It fit with the bleak, Gothic take of Burton's Batman, and distinctly has the director's spin.

While still considered the same continuity as Batman and Batman Returns, the world of Joel Schumacher's Bat-films is very different, illuminated by neon and loaded with camp.

Jim Carrey's Riddler was a different kind of villain for the franchise; he had the madman factor, but he also played for laughs. He was still conniving and brilliant, and carried the narcissistic beats of his comic book counterpart.

We all know what happened after Batman Forever. The worst parts of that film were placed under a magnifying glass and run on screen for two hours in Batman & Robin, and Batman movies were all but dead for nearly a decade.

Enter Christopher Nolan, and his more grounded take on Batman as a man who very well could die doing what he does every night. To kick it off, Nolan gave us two villains who had never been on-screen before: Ra's al Ghul and the Scarecrow.

This minimalist, almost basic take on the character turned the Scarecrow from a man who dressed in straw and rags into a man who literally used a burlap sack mask as a way to inspire fear.

Knowing how each director used these characters, our challenge this month is to redesign the Penguin, Riddler or Scarecrow for a director that didn't use them in their films. What might have been? How would Nolan interpret the Penguin or Riddler? How would Schumacher work the Penguin or Scarecrow into his narrative? What dark, fantastical path would Burton take the Riddler or Scarecrow down?

For this contest, we'll allow up to three submissions, one for each director. In your submission email, please indicate which director(s) you've intended your redesign(s) for, and how your take would fit into their narrative. This contest will also be guest-judged by Andrew Asberry, comic reviewer for Batman-News.com, who did a write-up of the contest here.

Submissions are due Tuesday, July 24 by 6:00 PM MST. Be sure to adhere to the applicable submission guidelines. If you have any questions, please send them to us at superheroofthemonth@gmail.com

Congratulations to Ross Radke, winner of this month's contest! But really, congratulations go out to all of the Top 5, since the scores separating these spots were based on razor-thin margins. Check out what the judges have to say, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Ross Radke - 23/30
Alex: Upfront, this was a tough contest for me. Dr. Octopus is one of my least favorite characters in comics (and entirely the reason I can't get behind Spider-Man 2). What struck me about Ross's design, though, was the camouflage concept. Otto Octavius is a scientist, and while he may be using his skills for evil, it's logical that he would use them to further his efforts. Accepting his lot in life, it would make sense that he'd adopt other attributes of his invertebrate namesake. In terms of costume design, however, there's nothing here that really grabs me, unfortunately.

Mitch: It's nice to see Doc Ock taking more cues from his namesake. And, yeah, I like the suit. The extra curved lines above the belt are something you may not notice right away but they really help bring the suit and the belt together.

Taylor: I really enjoyed this design it felt like a new and exciting interpenetration of Doc Ock. I really liked the face-gear, as well as the rest if the suit, as it kind of reminded me of a hazmat suit. Loved the colours and the camouflage design. Well done!

See the rest of the Top 5 after the jump!

Batman Movie Villains Results - Part 1

Hey, there! We're back with the first batch of redesigns for this month's Batman Movie Villains contest!

Warren Newsom's Nolanized Riddler
"I've chosen the Riddler as he might be interpreted by Christopher Nolan. Edward Nashton is a clerk who has worked for many years crunching numbers for a financial firm in Gotham. He’s an under-educated genius who has an instinct for investments and knack for coming up with creative ways to manipulate markets. The only thing that holds him back from moving up in the firm is the fact that he only has a two-year degree. The higher-ups come to him for his opinions, which he freely gives, and over the years he’s helped make them very rich men. When the firm gets caught up in a scandal, Nashton is the only person to serve prison time. He later finds out that his bosses had all actually received bonuses after the firm was bought out by a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises.

"Nashton escapes prison and begins a crime spree.  Wearing a bandana mask printed with a large question mark and using burglary and robbery as a fake motive, he hunts down all of the execs from his old firm and kills them (and any family member or witness who might be present). Before he pulls the trigger he gives them one last hope. He says, “You think you’re so smart?  I’ll tell you what – answer this and I’ll let you live…”  Then he asks them a riddle, worded so ambiguously that an answer is indeterminable. His victims can never answer, thus proving – in his mind at least – that they are intellectually inferior to him, so he feels justified in killing them.

"And since we’re designing villains for an imagined movie, then who better to play this narcissistic bad guy in a Christopher Nolan film than Justified’s Walton Goggins?"

Joker Little's Nolanized Penguin
"Still a short, dumpy older criminal, but in the real world that's pretty easy to make scary. No tux, just a leather coat over a t-shirt, and since no one has worn a monocle in about 70 years ago, he has a glassy, discolored blind eye."

Joker Little's Nolanized Riddler
"The real world equivalent of the Riddler would be something like Gotham's version of the Zodiac. I wouldn't even think he would be in the story very much, more like you would see headlines about him as characters walk by newsstands. When they do catch him it wouldn't be like, "Great Caesars ghost, it was the deputy mayor all along!" It would be some nobody."

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more Batman Movie Villains as we approach the release of The Dark Knight Rises! As always, be aware of the contest deadline -- Tuesday, July 24 -- and be sure to check out the Official Contest Announcement for details and special rules for this contest. Alright, after the last post's Nolanized take on villains, the other directors of the Bat-franchise are getting their go! Check out the newest entries below!
Dan Barrett's Schumacherized Penguin
"I imagine Shumacher's creative process going a little something like this: 'Okay, I want to bring The Penguin back from the dead. Somehow I have to make him more colorful though. That's what I love about comics, all of the pretty colors. He's a circus performer right? Carnivals are more colorful than circuses, and Carnival in Rio is more colorful than circuses and carnivals combined! Kids also loved that movie with all of the singing tropical birds. Hey, penguins are some sort of bird right? Bingo! Now he just needs nipples.'"

cmonies' Burtonized Scarecrow
"I focused on the heightened gothic silliness of Burton's work, particularly Batman Returns. The movie was filled with missile penguins and fish eating circus mobsters and resurrecting armies of cats. It had a lot more fun with Batman then it gets credit for so I had fun with this. This Scarecrow I think sticks to the gothic simplicity in Burton's usual designs but has a wackiness to it at the same time. The silliness in a scarecrow pumpkin head that can inexplicably make human facial expressions still mixes well with a creepiness that Burton's Batman contains. And also Burton's love for black made me think he wouldn't hold back in draping Scarecrow in as much as possible.

"I imagine this Scarecrow design would very comfortably fit Burton's usual narratives. I imagine it would just be Crane as a mad psychologist obsessed with bringing fear to the fearless, and Batman is the most fearless of them all, so he would be infatuated with destroying him with it. Maybe mix in some Hugo Strange motivation, with him trying or successfully figuring out Batman's secret identity to exploit his fears. On top of that, the scenes where Batman gets exposed to fear gas could be crazy fun. Bats flying out of his dead parents' mouths! Batman turning into a horrendous Man-Bat in his mind and trying to suck the blood of criminals! Catwoman's body exploding into a hundred flesh eating cats and consuming Batman! Just creepy fun all around."

Batman Movie Villains - Part 3 [UPDATED]

Over the weekend we had another submission pop in. Check it out!

Richard JP Le Guen's Schumacherized Penguin
"I decided that since the Schumacher films are sequels to the Burton films, a Schumacher Penguin shouldn't contradict the Burton Penguin too much. So this is the same character, who has survived the end of Batman Returns and is incarcerated in either Blackgate or Arkham. I wanted the straps on his straight jacket to evoke the feeling of Napoleonic piping -- making him still feel aristocratic -- and for the arms which hang loose to look somewhat like a child's penguin costume."

[Update]

Editor's Note: Usually we'll do same-day updates should we pick up new art when we post submissions, but I didn't get back to the desktop yesterday. Since submissions have been slower prior to the deadline of later, I figured it'd be best to update this now, rather than hold on it and wait. - AG

Matthew Ray's Burtonized Scarecrow
"My reworking I feel follows more in line with Burton in my mind. I think there is a toyishness about the the character that Burton could have exploited well. My take on Scarecrow is one where he relies on cutting edge tactics to instill fear, over that of chemical nature. I tried for a more traditional scarecrow feel."

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out all of the Batman Movie Villain redesigns we've received so far. Batman Movie Villains - Part 4 [UPDATED]

Hey, everyone! We're back! With The Dark Knight Rises hitting theaters at midnight tonight, excitement for Batman is high. Here, we present you with more villains that never were:

Justin DeVine's Nolanized Riddler
"I imagine my Riddler not as a meglomaniacal super criminal, but more of a Wikileaks/open-availability-of-information type of guy who becomes fixated on the question of who the Batman is, and who slowly becomes more destructive in his quest to find out.

"I pared down his outfit as dramatically as I felt I could. The paisley of his shirt is meant to echo his traditional Matthe Lesko-esque, covered-in-question-marks getup. The only actual question mark left to him is a lapel pin made from a vintage typewriter key, which I imagine as a gift that someone bought for him on ETSY."

Joe Lozzano's Scarecrow, Nolanized Penguin and Riddler
"Penguin: She is a femme fatale with a tech-mask that allows her to go under water (at last we can see a penguin power). She is a 'shoot them all' girl. The cane came from a former penguin. She is married and has two children

"Scarecrow. He wears a tech suit to deal with the fear poison. The helmet has some lights effects. He likes pizza.

"Riddler. He is a long term convict very fond of solving cross words and the like. Due to a drug habit, he has a clocked up brain (more synapses, more speed) and no respect for other people's property or right to live. He moved from Boston to Gotham, he still likes to see the Celtics on TV."

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out all of the Batman Movie Villain redesigns we've received so far. Be sure to check out the Official Contest Announcement for details on this month's contest, as well as our Stephanie Brown Fan Art Special we'll be posting later this month!

Batman Movie Villains - Part 5

Hey there! I had something of a 5-day weekend, so I'm sorry for the delay in getting these up. Here are the final results of our Batman Movie Villains contest!

Matheus Barbosa's Nolanized Riddler
"I imagined Riddler as a common enemy between the Gotham police, the mafia and Batman. He would make a huge puzzle, challenging anyone who would like to gain the prize... Batman's secret identity (he discovered using his deducting abilities)! This puzzle would involve the murderer of mafia members and police officers, and the familiars of those people for each wrong answer of his riddles. Riddler would also have a unique puzzle for Batman, a chance for him to stop all the killing, preserve his secret identity and capture the head behind all of it."

Emilse Cepeda's Nolanized Riddler
"Riddler is my favourite villain of Batman for his story, personality, and because he uses the intellectu to put his challengers between the life and death. I took a basic and minimalist approach to dress, using the classic black, green and violet color scheme. He's a narcissist, brilliant, egocentric and insane."

thedespicablegoat's Nolanized Riddler
"This is Edward Nashton, a former member of the notorious Gotham crime families. He was often called whenever someone in the mob needed something 'special' done. Nashton was known for his wit, often cracking jokes--even during a job. He often come up with quick, insignificant riddles, thusly being nicknamed by the local newspaper, 'Eddy the Riddler'. Edward was quite proud of his infamy, until one day his reign ended. Batman caught Nashton red-handed, and off to prison he went.

"Angry and unstable whilst serving his sentence, this angst and hate was gradually channeled to the man that put him there: Batman. And ever since, Edward, has been intent on finding the answer to just one riddle: Who is the Batman? Rather than focusing on the destruction of Gotham, or the chaos of people, this villain is after one thing, and that is Batman. Nashton eventually breaks out of prison, and so his gauntlet begins."

Christian Burns' Burtonized Scarecrow
"Jonathan Crane was put under the care of his somewhat crazed grandmother, who was somewhat of a bird fanatic, and had a large broken-down aviary on her property. Although he was warned not to go into the aviary, young Jonathan ventured inside. There, he was viciously attacked by a murder of crows, and his right hand was damaged so badly that amputation was required. Due to this, he developed a crippling fear of crows all through his adolescence, and was mocked and bullied in high school, both for his amputation and for his somewhat lanky stature, earning the mocking nickname 'Scarecrow.' One night, when walking home, he was ambushed by some of his tormentors and strung up in a field, like a scarecrow. This was the last straw, and Jonathan sought revenge on his tormentors. He replaced his prosthetic hand with a sickle, and dressed up as a Scarecrow. At a school dance, Crane cornered the leader of his tormentors outside of the school. Frightened by the Scarecrow, the bully ran into the busy street, and was subsequently struck by a car, killing him. Crane, shocked by this unexpected result, ran away and left the town permanently. Eventually, he gained his doctoral degree in psychology at Gotham University and became a professor of parapsychology, having become fascinated with the power of fear. But when he was fired by the university for inappropriate conduct, both in class and his research, he sought revenge once again..."

Christian Burns' Burtonized Riddler
"Edward Nygma was a man of genius intellect and a lover of riddles. He dedicated his life to understanding the mechanics of the mind and the source of intelligence, both out of his own interest, and to prove to others that he was vastly more intelligent than them. When in university, he became friends with a fellow psychology student, Jonathan Crane. But midway through his own doctoral studies on intelligence, he grew very ill, and was diagnosed with an advanced stage of brain cancer. Seeing this as unfair, and with the tumor in his brain distorting his thought patterns, he became deranged and determined to prove that he was still smarter than everyone around him, including the famed Batman. Nygma's deranged brain convinced him that the only way to get Batman's attention was to commit crimes and leave riddles for him to solve. But, although the Batman solved these riddles, he never caught Nygma. After a while, Nygma had brain surgery (leaving that scar on this head), and the tumor was removed, relieving the distortion of his thought patterns. However, the months in the hospital left him habitually addicted to telling riddles and committing crime in order to have Batman solve them. But this time, he decided to introduce himself to Batman and Gotham as the Riddler."

Anthony A. Farrar's Nolanized Riddler
Editor's Note: For Anthony's thoughts on his design, please click here (they are quite in-depth).

Alexi Sargeant's Nolanized Riddler
"This version of the Riddler is a brilliant, wealthy con-man who comes out of retirement in order to match wits with the Batman. Trusting in his resources to keep him out of jail, Edward Nygma crafts a garish persona and leaves a series of taunting clues for Batman connected to a deadly scavenger hunt for kidnapped Gothamites rigged up with riddling deathtraps. His endgame is to force the Dark Knight to bargain for clues by revealing hint's to Batman's own secret identity. Though cavalier about human life, the Riddler is ultimately motivated more by intellectual arrogance than by brutality or ambition, and so would make sense to team with a more visceral threat like the Black Mask."

Issac Bartsch's Nolanized Riddler
"Eddie Nigma, college computer genius is hired by Wayne Enterprises for his a naming computer programming skills at such a young age.  When he recklessly hacks into secure Wayne enterprise files, Eddie is fired for misusing his skills.  Humiliated and bitter Eddie uses his hacker name, The Riddler, to seek revenge on Wayne enterprises and who he sees as the figurehead, Bruce Wayne himself."

Issac Bartsch's Schumacherized Penguin
"Circus ringleader Oswald Cobblepot runs a drug ring from the back-end of his traveling circus until he is shutdown by Batman creating a lifelong vendetta against the Bat."

Issac Bartsch's Burtonized Scarecrow
Editor's Note: Issac didn't leave any thoughts on this piece.

Barry's Scarecrow
"I just like Scarecrow, and I think a graveyard setting is great for a haunted scene."

Joshua Daniel's Schumacherized Penguin
"I thought he would be perfect for Joel Schumacher as he's already royal and a bit showy. I fashioned him after Alfred Molina, because after playing Doc Ock and Snidely Whiplash, he's the kind of big name actor that they would pick for that role.  I gave him a shiny glittery purple motif including a full feather boa."

Joshua Daniel's Burtonized Scarecrow
"Scarecrow is perfect for TIm Burton as he's a tall lanky spooky character. I fashioned him after Johnny Depp as that's who I saw Burton picking for the role. I made his colors more drab, and made his face look more like a scarecrow with scars rather than having a mask. I think Burton would rather have Depp's face out as much as possible, and give him some sort of back story in which he's crazy and immune to his own gas so doesn't need to worry about the mask."

Tony Ryland's Burtonized Riddler
"Let the emo girls swoon again."

Eric Kenney's Nolanized Penguin
"My inspiration is the movie The Jackal. Basically he's an ex-League of Shadows mercenary. He's Eastern European, about 5'0 -5'3, and heavily muscular, heavy accent, he works alone. Quiet and cunning. He also has a touch of Le Chefre from Casino Royale. I envison him being hired by the mob, which brings him to Gotham and once there he likes what he finds and begins to take out those that hired him rather than work for them. He begins to takeover."

Eric Kenney's Burtonized Riddler
"The road I took with Riddler was to follow his storyline of the Red Triangle Circus and Make the Riddler a rebellious member/employee. He's the guy that can guess your weight, maybe he's the original leader before the Penguin brought them to Gotham. As far as look goes, I was inspired by Something Wicked This Way Comes, an excellent dark movie form the early '80's. I believe the villain's name is Mr. Dark, and I took inspiration from his design."
